Opportunity: System identification/Numerical Modeller @University of Manchester--Manchester, UK

BACKGROUND:
Following a substantial investment of Â£6.3M by BBSRC and EPSRC, the University of Manchester is pleased to announce a third tranche of Experimental Officer positions in Systems Biology for the new Manchester Center for Integrative Systems Biology (MCISB. These are externally funded for 5 years and will then become incorporated into the Universityâ??s baseline. The MCISB programme will largely be based in the Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre (http://www.mib.ac.uk). As part of this programme, we are presently seeking to fill the following position and invite applications from suitable, highly qualified team player who wishes to be part of this major initiative, as well as suggestions from other colleagues of highly qualified candidates.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
This post involves the development and application of computing methods that generate models of living cells and their pathways on the basis of dynamic experimental data. The latter may be pathway or genome wide and part of the assignment is also to devise the type of data that should be collected to empower this reverse modelling approach (for further details, see on http://www.mcisb.org or on http://www.manchester.ac.uk/vacancies).

REQUIREMENTS:
Postgraduate or more likely postdoctoral qualification; the candidate is expected to have, demonstrate, and maintain an expertise in state-of-the-art methods of numerical modelling, much including the theory of nonlinear inverse problems; further expected are: a background in methods of numerical analysis, inverse problems or computational biology; basic knowledge and understanding of molecular or cell biology; several years experience in mathematical modelling; excellent verbal, writing, reporting, communication and organizational skills; ability to work independently for the common goal of a team, as well as to work interactively with experimentalists and other modellers.

TERMS:
Appointment for up to five years in the first instance, with potential to extend. This is a full-time post.

LOCALE:
Manchester; the MCISB will be housed in the Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre (http://www.mib.ac.uk), a major building and intellectual grouping being established within the University of Manchester.

COMPENSATION:
Salary will be up to Â£30,002 per annum according to relevant experience and qualifications.
