BACKGROUND:
We are looking for two exceptional postdoctoral researchers to join the recently estabÂlished Microbial Systems Division (http://www.llnl.gov/bio/microbial_systems) within the Biosciences Directorate at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
The research will focus on developing novel comÂputational tools for comparative meta-genomics and analysis of regulaÂtory mechanisms across a wide range of microbial species. The long-term end goal is to achieve a predictive underÂstandÂing of genoÂtype-to-phenotype mapping of isolated species as well as microÂbial communities, with a specific interest in the metabolic capabilities of such comÂmunities.
This new effort will be able to draw on a wide range of existing LLNL resources and expertise in areas such as high throughput sequencing, microbial genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, world-class computational facilities, as well as a longstanding history of interdisciplinary research.RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidates will work as part of a comÂputaÂtional and systems biology team, and will have the opportuÂnity to interact with molecular bioÂlogists, geneticists, bioÂchemists, geochemists, engiÂneers, physicists, computer scientists, etc. CandiÂdates should have a strong commitment to collaboÂrative research, but will also have the opportunity to pursue independent research activities.REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES
The "ideal" candidate would have a published track record in bioinformatics, computational biology, or machine learning techniques; strong computaÂtional modeling/analysis skills (linear algebra, factor analysis, Bayesian methods, pattern discovery, etc.), a solid grasp of statistics; familiarity with comparative genomics (and other â??omicsâ??), molecular biology, metabolism, and gene regulation; and hands-on experiÂence with gene expression data, genomic databases and tools.LOCALE
