PROJECT TITLE: THE DEVELOPMENT OF A METABOLOMICS TOOLBOX FOR NUTRITIONAL
SCIENCE

BACKGROUND

The student will be engaged in the development of NMR, MS, multiple hyphenated techniques (SPE-LC-NMR-MS) and chemometric methods for the metabolic profiling of food products. They will join a well-equipped bioanalytical group in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Nottingham. The School of Pharmacy is one of the most highly rated Pharmacy Schools in the UK and we hold a ranking of 'International Excellence' for our research. In addition, the studentship will be run in collaboration with a multi-national food company and the opportunity will exist for the student to spend time in their labs in the Netherlands.

FUNDING

Provided from a collaborative (CASE) award between the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and an industrial sponsor. University fees are covered by the award and a tax-free stipend of approximately £12000 pa plus an annual supplement from the industrial sponsor (amount to be confirmed, but not less than £2500 pa, giving a total tax-free income of £14500) will be paid directly to the student to cover living expenses.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain a First Class or Upper Second Class BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry or related subject with experience in analytical science, or MSc in Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry or related subject with experience in anaytical science. Practical experience in any of the following areas: bioanalysis, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry or chemometrics would be an advantage, though a keen interest and willingness to learn is more essential.

ELIGIBILITY

The position is available to UK and other EU citizens who have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years.

LOCALE:
The studentship will be based at the main University campus of Nottingham University in the UK, with the opporunity to spend time with the industrial sponsor.
