PRESS RELEASE: Yong Huang added to the Bioinformatics.Org Board of Directors

On April 3, 2006 the Board of Directors of the Bioinformatics Organization (Bioinformatics.Org) elected Yong Huang of British Columbia, Canada, as a fellow director.

The term for directors is indefinite, and they have legal voting power within the Organization, which is incorporated in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, USA. Eight other directors serve on the Board: J.W. Bizzaro, M.Sc. (Chairman); Damian Counsell, M.Sc.; Martin Kucej, Ph.D.; Mark Luo, M.Sc.; Peter D. St. Onge, M.Sc.; Jon K. Stewart, J.D.; Paul Stothard, Ph.D.; and Gary H. Van Domselaar, Ph.D.

Huang received a B.A. and M.S. from Ocean University in China. He also has an M.S. in biology and MIS from the University of Michigan.

During the past few years, Huang has been working with the Pfizer bioinformatics team in Ann Arbor and has spent some time in Boston with Aventis. His recent work involves several open-source projects hosted at the UBC Bioinformatics Center. His interests in bioinformatics are mainly in the area of data integration and text mining.

Huang started to get involved with Bioinformatics.Org in the summer of 2000 and with the Lab Rats group a few years ago. At BiO, he is working on the Text2Knowledge project and recently started the Gene Wikipedia project.

Huang is the father of two boys. His day job is as operation lead, managing a team of Unix systems administrators and an IT group of a wireless game/social community company located in Vancouver, BC.
