    BIOINFORMATICS SPECIALIST

    Bioinformatics research scientist needed to perform research on comparative genomics of marine cyanobacteria and environmental genomic data. The successful applicant will join an active group of researchers in marine microbial ecology that focus on biogeochemical cycling and the metabolism of microbes in the oceans. The position is part of an interdisciplinary facility for marine environmental genomics and remote instrumentation development funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. The Bioinformatics Specialist will perform comparative analyses on recently completed cyanobacterial genomes, as well as environmental genomic data from shotgun sequencing and BAC libraries. The Bioinformatics Specialist will also be involved in the design and interpretation of controlled whole genome gene expression experiments, and will help to maintain the bioinformatics cluster.     RANK: Specialist, step 1-4

    COMPENSATION: $59,400- $81,996, commensurate with experience.

    TERMS: Two years with possibility of extension contingent upon performance and funding availability.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • An M.S, Ph.D., or equivalent in bioinformatics / computational biology / computer science disciplines with a preferred emphasis in microbiology.
    • Experience with UNIX-based operating systems, relational databases (e.g. SQL) and computer programming (e.g. Java, C++) or scripting languages (e.g. Perl/Python). Understanding of basic fundamentals of program design and familiarity with major computer concepts. Previous experience in parallel programming using MPI is desirable.
    • Familiarity with publicly available database resources for microbial or plant genomics is desirable. Extensive experience in analysis of DNA and protein sequences, and comparative genomic analysis expected. Should be well versed in public data sources, web tools and databases, and be familiar with Unix shells and utilities. Experience in phylogeny, data mining, genetics and statistics is desirable.
    • Strong organizational skills to manage and document multiple simultaneous projects. Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting of data and communication with programmers and bench biologists.
    • Familiarity with experimental techniques in molecular biology, including microarray analysis desirable.
    • Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
