DESCRIPTION

The consortium E-MeP is an Integrated Project funded by the European Commission. E-MeP's research platform focuses on developing and implementing new technologies to solve the bottlenecks that preclude the determination, at high throughput, of high-resolution structures of membrane proteins and membrane protein complexes. This is being achieved by integrating the activities of many of the world leaders in membrane protein structural biology (including two Nobel prize winners). The group of Nicolas Le Novère at the EBI is responsible of the computing parts of E-MeP projects, including selection of targets, storage and redistribution of data, bioinformatics prediction, and project reporting. The successful candidate will be in charge of the knowledge-handling infrastructure of the project: design of data-model, creation and maintenance of databases, development of authenticated web-interfaces and data-processing tools etc.

REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate will be a computer scientist with at least a Masters Degree in Computer Science or Bioinformatics. S/he will be familiar with life science topics. Although not required, knowledge of structural biology will be be a plus. The successful candidate will have to interact with the project partners, at all levels, from student to PI. Therefore s/he is expected to defend possible points of view, to advise and help people to make the most of the existing technology, but also to listen to their concerns and be ready to bend his/her approaches to cope with theirs. Mandatory computer knowledge includes javascript, PHP, SQL (MySQL) and XHTML. Knowledge of JAVA programming (including JSP) is welcome. Familiarity with GNU/Linux is required. Good communication and interpersonal skills are required.

TERMS

An initial contract of 2 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
