BACKGROUND
The University of Cape Town in South Africa houses a Node of the National Bioinformatics Network and aims to do Bioinformatics research and training and provide Bioinformatics services to the South African research community. One of the major services provided by the Node is in the analysis of Microarray data. We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with experience in microarray data analysis.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The position involves research into the development of new and/or application of existing analytical tools for the analysis of microarray data. In addition, the incumbent will be expected to provide statistical advice and analytical services to scientists conducting DNA microarray experiments at UCT and elsewhere in South Africa. The majority of clients use cDNA-based glass arrays but it is envisaged that several researchers will need analytical advice and help in analysing high-density oligonucleotide and protein array data. Experience in using R-Bioconductor would be advantageous, as many consultations will typically involve the construction of R scripts for a particular analysis. Additional to the consulting and support aspects of the role, it also involves research into the development of new tools for design and analysis of oligonucleotide and cDNA-based glass slide arrays as well as some analytical training.REQUIREMENTS
The position requires experience with microarray data analysis, statistical principles and familiarity with MIAME standards for microarray experiments. A solid knowledge of microarray design, pre-processing methods, differential expression and clustering is essential. Good communication skills are essential for communicating statistical principles and methodology to biological researchers.
