DESCRIPTION

The Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology (MMI) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has an opening for a post doctoral fellow in the Pineda Biocomputing Group.

The post-doctoral fellow will focus on a genome-wide survey to discover and characterize non-coding regulatory RNA (ncRNA) in Plasmodium falciparum. This will involve advanced development and application of our RNA-genefinder, as well as interaction with the Kumar laboratory in MMI, which is performing experimental validation of ncRNA candidates.

The fellow will also be encouraged to participate in other collaborative multidisciplinary research projects including: 1) Design and analysis of high-throughput yeast knockout screens for genes that regulate of programmed cell death in eukaryotes, 2) Algorithms and statistical methods for rapid microorganism identification with MALDI mass spectrometry, 3) Modeling host cell invasion by Toxoplasma gondii, and 4) development of biological databases for integrating and processing field and laboratory data for the Malaria Institute at Macha (Zambia). The successful candidate will have access to students and colleagues in MMI and the Department of Biostatistics, as well as shared high performance computing resources.

REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must possess solid data-analysis/machine-learning skills as well as research software-development skills as demonstrated by a relevant PhD disseration or publication(s). A PhD in biology, bioinformatics or a physical/computational science (with some knowledge of molecular biology) is required.

PREFERENCES

Software development skills should include Perl, XML, SQL, R/S+. System adminstration skills should include experience with Linux/Unix, MacOS X and Windows platforms. Experience analyzing high-throughput geneomics data (e.g. RT-PCR, micro-array analysis), is plus.
