BACKGROUND

Applications are invited for a Computational Biologist, required to carry out a project which forms part of the EU Framework VI-funded Grain Legumes Integrated Project (http://www.eugrainlegumes.org). The postholder will work within the Evolutionary Dynamics group led by Dr Jo Dicks (http://cbr.jic.ac.uk/dicks/).

RESPONSIBILITIES

The aims of this project are to:

1) Develop a new probabilistic model to represent the processes of retrotransposon insertion and introgression within plant genomes
2) Design and develop a computer program, NETWORK, to implement the new model
3) Apply the model to key plant datasets

REQUIREMENTS

Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent experience in a numerical/computational science with good programming skills in C/C++ or Java. Good organisational skills, with the ability to handle complex ideas are also required. A background in statistics with previous experience in genetics or genomics is desirable.

TERMS

This is a limited term contract where the appointment is funded until 9th Feb 2008.

COMPENSATION

Salary on appointment will be within the range £23,022 to £26,541 per annum. The post attracts an additional retention and recruitment allowance of £3,800 to £6,000 per annum depending on starting salary, this is currently in place until 31 Dec 2006 and to be negotiated after that date. JIC offers a choice of a final salary and stakeholder pensions.
