Research fellow

BACKGROUND

We seek an excellent post doctoral researcher to lead the informatics research at the GTI related to the exciting and emerging discipline of interference RNA (RNAi).

The GTI is an interdisciplinary centre focusing on a range of genomic technologies and is a founding member of an international consortium, RNAi Global (http://www.rnaiglobal.org) that aims to develop whole genome RNAi screening techniques. As part of this consortium the GTI is leading the establishment of data exchange standards and we require an experienced bioinformatician to lead this effort.

REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate will have preferably worked at a post-doctoral level for at least 3 years, have a publication record in a relevant field and ideally have experience working with similar biological data standards, such as MIAME. Good verbal and written communications skills are essential. Technically you will need good programming and database development skills. Experience working with XML and web services would be beneficial.

This high-profile position provides an excellent opportunity to work on an emerging informatics standard at its inception and to make a significant impact on the field of RNAi internationally.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1) Lead research at the GTI in the development of data models and data exchange standards in the field of RNAi. This will include the development of software tools and databases. Develop reference implementations and pilot applications based on the informatics standards. 2) Take a key role in the organisation of the RNAi Global Bioinformatics Workgroup. This will include the organising meetings and workshops and the organisation of research activities carried out by workgroup members. The post-holder will also be required to plan and organise all informatics activities relating to RNAi within the GTI. 3) Act as the coordinator for the Bioinformatics workgroup of the RNAi Global consortium. This will include representing the workgroup at conferences and other academic events at an international level. 4) Produce and contribute to scientific publications, in particular in the area of RNAi informatics. 5) Contribute to the writing of research grants and take an active role in securing future research funding for the GTI.

COMPENSATION

This position is available immediately and salary will be awarded on the AR2 grade. AR1 grade may be considered for less qualified applicants. The closing date for applications is 31 May 2006.
