BACKGROUND
Computercraft seeks a microbial genomes curator to join its team of highly skilled and dedicated molecular biologists and microbiologists working onsite at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), in Bethesda, Maryland.
The successful candidate will review and analyze genetic sequence data from GenBank, an annotated collection of all publicly available DNA sequences, as well as Microbial Genome Databases currently under development at NCBI. This detail-oriented position requires a Ph.D. in molecular biology or related field, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team.RESPONSIBILITIES
â?¢ Perform activities related to building and maintaining GenBank.
â?¢ Correspond with submitters of GenBank records to ensure that their data is accurately portrayed in their GenBank records
â?¢ Review and analyze available sequence data to generate standards for the most complete and accurate sequence possible and to expand annotation associated with that sequence.
â?¢ Develop protein function annotation.
â?¢ Review and curate protein clusters.
â?¢ Use specialized databases, bioinformatics software, and literature reviews to create curated sequence records for bacteria.
â?¢ Create reviewed records for release to public: annotate record including summary of gene function; and correct, reannotate, or extend sequence data using data available in GenBank records and tools designed to analyze clusters of related sequences.
â?¢ Assist in problem identification and recommend enhancements to analytical, processing, and statistical software.REQUIREMENTS
â?¢ Ph.D. in molecular biology or microbiology.
â?¢ Experience in protein/ RNA/ DNA sequence analysis and bioinformatics software.
â?¢ Hands-on laboratory experience and computer expertise.
â?¢ Excellent oral and written communication skills.
