BACKGROUND:
The Bioinformatics and Arthropod Genomics Centers at Kansas State University seek a computer science professional to develop databases and data mining tools in support of insect genomics. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop databases and data mining tools in support of insect genomicists and scientists. Expand and maintain the comprehensive genome dataset, BeetleBase, containing various types of data, ranging from genomic sequences to mutant phenotypes of Tribolium. The integrated database provides the important backend for developing computational tools for comparative genomics. Develop and maintain web-based applications that support public access to BeetleBase. The K-State Arthropod Genomics Center, in combination with the Bioinformatics Center, provides bioinformatics support to K-State researchers for EST sequence and microarray data analysis. Support includes developing computer programs and software tools that scientists can use to analyze scientific, biologically-based data. This position will also collaborate with scientists to develop new genomic resources and preliminary data to support extramurally-funded grant proposals.

REQUIREMENTS

M.S. in Computing Information Science and strong background in database development and programming. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, and ability to work both independently and in collaboration with other scientists and students.

PREFERENCES

Some knowledge of genetics and functional genomics.

TERMS

This full-time position is provisionally funded for up to 5 years.
