    BACKGROUND

The environmental microbiology research group at UNSW, led by Assoc Prof Rick Cavicchioli, focuses on the adaptation of archaea and bacteria to extreme environments. Approaches to studying molecular microbial adaptation are heavily based in genomic and proteomic sciences. Genomic and proteomic programs are structured around genome sequences of individual Antarctic archaea (Methanococcoides burtonii, Methanogenium frigidum, Halorubrum lacusprofundi) and marine bacteria (Sphingopyxis alaskensis, Photobacterium angustum), and large scale metagenomics of Antarctic lakes. These programs of study at UNSW are collaborations with the USA based Joint Genome Institute (JGI), the J. Craig Venter Institute(JCVI), and The Institute of Genome Research (TIGR). Several genome sequences have recently been closed, providing unique opportunities for an enthusiastic PhD graduate to rapidly generate high impact discoveries in the fields of environmental microbiology and ecology.

    REQUIREMENTS

We are seeking a recent PhD graduate in Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry. The post-doctoral fellow will interact closely with existing researchers and international collaborators, and the immediate goals will be to undertake scientific research using bioinformatics to infer the biology of environmental microorganisms. The candidate should preferably have a strong background in the biology of archaea or marine bacteria, expertise with bioinformatics, and demonstratable publications in this area. This appointment will be offered for an initial period of one year with the strong possibility of renewal subject to funding.
