    DESCRIPTION

We seek a post-doctoral fellow (Position #PB-S095-306, URL: http://www.noble.org/Jobs/Employment.asp) to work on the bioinformatics aspect of a project entitled Comparative genomics of secretory trichomes – Biofactories for production of plant secondary metabolites. The project is founded by National Science Foundation with an award (#DBI-0605033) amount of approximately 1.4 million US dollars over a period of 09/01/2006 – 08/31/2009. This multi-disciplinary project combines genomics, informatics and molecular biology with analytical biochemistry, enzymology, and metabolic engineering.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

Research will be conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Patrick Xuechun Zhao in the Plant Biology Division at the Noble Foundation. He/she will be responsible for constructing a publicly available database of genes and metabolites expressed in plant trichomes. The database will host experimental information on trichome metabolite profiles, metabolic pathways occurring in trichomes, and phenotypic consequences of gene knock-out or silencing . Besides the required responsibility in database development, curation, management and maintenance, he/she will assist in problem identification and recommend enhancements to analytical, processing, and statistical software.

He/she will also carry out independent research on various problems raised by the project. Suggested research topics include, but are not limited to:
    • Algorithms on high-throughput gene and metabolite expressions analysis and their applications for in planta expression analysis and mining of trichome-expressed genes and metabolites.
    • Data integration and data mining of heterogeneous plant genomics data, including protein/ RNA/ DNA sequences, microarray gene expressions, metabolites x-MS profiles, and phenotypes due to gene manipulation, etc.
    • Computational biology models of biological pathways and network discovery .
    REQUIREMENTS:
Preferred qualifications include: Education to the level of PhD in bioinformatics / computational biology / computer science and/or genomics and molecular genetics; Good understanding of plant genomics and genetics research; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Programming skills with at least one of the following languages: C/C++, Perl, PHP and Java; Capability of developing bioinformatics applications to aid basic research in plant science; Knowledge of SQL language and SQL Server; Experience in developing large scale scientific databases and data analysis systems. Experience in bioinformatics, particularly in protein/ RNA/ DNA sequence analysis and bioinformatics software, is desired.
