DESCRIPTION:
Tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenure-track Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, rank dependent on experience. We are seeking a dynamic individual committed to undergraduate teaching who can help develop curriculum in bioinformatics, collaborate with department faculty and biologists, and assume a leadership role in the MSCS Department’s undergraduate Bioinformatics Concentration.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The main duty will be to teach an average of 12 credit hours of course work each semester in general education courses in mathematics and/or statistics and major courses. Collaboration with other faculty is expected. Involvement in curriculum development, research and scholarly activity, academic advisement, and service are expected along with other duties as assigned by the department chair. The use of laptops in the classroom and web-based technology is also expected.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. An earned PhD in bioinformatics or an earned PhD in mathematics, statistics/biostatistics, or computer science with experience in bioinformatics by August 2007. 2. Evidence of teaching potential and strong interest in undergraduate teaching. 3. Interest in classroom use of laptops and web-based technology.
SALARY & COMPENSATION:
Salary level is competitive with an excellent benefit and retirement package, and relocation expense allowance.
DEPARTMENT:
The Mathematics, Statistics & Computer Science Department has 23 full-time members, a strong tradition of excellence in teaching, and a growing program of scholarship and research in mathematics, computer science, statistics, and related areas. The department offers all the core courses necessary for the University's program in Applied Mathematics & Computer Science which enrolls approximately 150 students. It also provides service courses for the various programs within the University. Department members have been active in incorporating technology into their courses. Current technologies include the use of laptops, graphing calculators, course web sites, symbolic mathematics software (e.g., Maple), interactive distance education, and web-enhanced instruction (e.g., Desire2Learn and Course Compass). The department has a growing interest in involving undergraduate students in research.
