This position will be within the Joint Centers for Systems Biology at Columbia, which brings together computational scientists from many different departments. The candidate will work closely with application scientists on a variety of projects involving analysis, storage and retrieval of diverse types of biological data. While programming ability and experience is paramount, prior experience or background in the field of bioinformatics would be very valuable. Projects may involve microarray gene expression data, gene sequence annotation and analysis, pathogen identification through use of Mass Spectrometry, and storage of data into databases and retrieval to web interfaces or other applications. Specific tasks may include primer design, sequence alignment, motif-finding, construction of phylogenetic trees etc. For web-based database projects a lightweight 3-tier design is usually implemented using MySQL. The candidate should be familiar with n-tier application/server architectures. He or she should be proficient in Java and use of the MySQL database system, and have a working knowledge of Perl and C++. In addition experience with and understanding of the Apache HTTP server and an application server technology such as Apache Tomcat is required, as is familiarity Perl, C++ and PHP.

    PREFERENCES

Prior experience in bioinformatics programming including sequence analysis would be very useful. Demonstrated familiarity or experience with the full life-cycle of software development, including requirements gathering, design, implementation, documentation and maintenance would also be very helpful, as would experience in one or more current MVC frameworks such as Spring.
