DESCRIPTION

The primary duties are to implement the scientific training programme of the EBI. This will involve:
• Organising the scientific programme for user-training courses, workshops, lectures, demonstrations and open days
• Creating and updating tutorials, workbooks and eLearning materials in liaison with outreach representatives and external contractors
• Teaching of courses where appropriate
• Making course materials (including a new eLearning platform) available on the web, in close liaison with the EBI’s External Services Team
• Applying for training-related funding
• Interacting closely with the EBI Industry Programme Coordinator to optimise the use of the EBI’s training resources
• Interacting closely with the EMBL International Centre for Advanced Training [EICAT] to optimise the use of EMBL’s training facilities
• Interacting with collaborators to organise joint courses
• Gathering and analysing training statistics, and promoting training events in liaison with other staff members

The position will involve substantial autonomy and will require extensive interactions with the Group and Team Leaders of the EBI as well as with training and outreach representatives within the groups. The role is likely to involve extensive international travel.

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate should hold a PhD in Bioinformatics or in a related field, and ideally have some postdoctoral experience. Know-how in user training and/or the development of training materials is essential. Substantial experience in designing and running bioinformatics courses from introductory to advanced levels as well as project management skills are required, as is a thorough understanding of both the principles behind effective user training and the different methods that can be used to achieve learning objectives. The ability to meet tight deadlines is essential. In addition to being highly self-motivated, the successful candidate will have excellent organisational and communication skills as well as the ability to contribute effectively to a team. (S)he should have worked in an international environment, either within academia or in a commercial setting. Familiarity with Windows, MS Office, e-mail and Internet applications is essential. A working knowledge of other operating systems (e.g. UNIX/Linux) is highly desirable. HTML editing and designing, as well as knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, QuarkXpress or other drawing and page-layout programmes are considered to be an advantage. Fluency in English is essential and familiarity with other European languages is extremely desirable.

CONTRACT

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
