    BACKGROUND:
    The John Innes Centre is one of the world’s leading not-for-profit research institutes (http://www.jic.ac.uk) and is an independent, international centre of excellence in plant science and microbiology grant-aided by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. Our mission is to carry out fundamental and strategic research, to train scientists and to make our findings available to society. Our research is organised into seven major programmes: Biological Chemistry, Cell and Developmental Biology, Computational and Systems Biology, Crop Genetics, Disease and Stress Biology, Metabolic Biology and Molecular Microbiology.

    Research in these Programmes is supported by genomics, proteomic and metabolite analysis services, extensive plant and microbial growth facilities, comprehensive microscopy and protein structure facilities, and expert bioinformatics support.

    We seek applications from outstanding, highly motivated researchers for the Head of Computational and Systems Biology.

    The institute presently has a thriving Computational Biology Unit with five groups in modelling and genome-based informatics. We have recently decided to develop this Unit into a new Department of Computational and Systems Biology and now seek to appoint an outstanding scientist to lead the department. The successful candidate will be a creative, high-level research leader in an area of computational or systems biology relevant to JIC?s overall programme and with demonstrated or potential ability to provide scientific leadership to the new department. The post holder will be expected to build his/her own research group through external funding. The appointee will have the opportunity to lead the search for additional faculty appointments in the current 5-year funding cycle. A strong start up package including salary for a permanent Research Assistant and an allocation for consumables, equipment and travel is offered, together with a continuing programme of professional development.

    REQUIREMENTS

    We seek candidates with outstanding research and publication records. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an internationally high-profile independent research programme, and to contribute to collaborative projects, resource development, and training.
