BACKGROUND

The University of Louisville recently assembled a multidisciplinary Bioinformatics Task Force to construct a roadmap for the university in terms of bioinformatics education, research, infrastructure, and outreach. As part of this initiative, five new tenure track positions beginning in 2007 were announced. An additional five bioinformatics positions will be allocated by 2010. This initiative will allow the applicant to participate in interdisciplinary activities, including collaboration with computational biologists across a number of departments, including the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Arts and Sciences, and Engineering. Current research interests of members of the bioinformatics research group (http://bioinformatics.louisville.edu) are focused in the areas of DNA and protein sequence analysis, microarray image and data analysis, in-situ hybridization image analysis, and developing systems to analyze gene expression in birth defects. In addition, the CECS department has established research programs in the areas of data and web mining, databases, multimedia, and information security. RESPONSIBILITIES

The Department of Computer Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) at the University of Louisville invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level, to begin Fall, 2007. We are searching for a highly motivated computer scientist with a strong research focus in bioinformatics to complement established research programs. Potential research areas may include structural bioinformatics, proteomic data analysis, high-throughput analysis, systems biology design, visualization techniques, and development of bioinformatics algorithms. Candidates will have both research and teaching responsibilities within the CECS Department and will be expected to participate in collaborative and interdisciplinary activities.

REQUIREMENTS

The position requires a Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering, bioinformatics, or equivalent. The individual filling this position should have strong English language skills and be willing to collaborate with researchers with diverse backgrounds. In addition, they should possess strong foundations in computer science and engineering. Applicants should have a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching, including experience with extramural funding agencies.
