BACKGROUND

The Department of Mathematics at Hiram College invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position beginning August 2007. Hiram College is a selective, private, liberal arts college with a unique 12-3 calendar that enables students to study a topic broadly for 12 weeks, as well as intensely study a narrow topic or study abroad for 3 weeks. The college has recently completed a $52.3M capital campaign. The village of Hiram is located in rural northeast Ohio, approximately 30 miles from the theaters, museums, professional sports, and ethnic neighborhoods of Cleveland.

REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications include a Ph.D. in statistics, biostatistics, or applied mathematics; demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduates; and a commitment to continued scholarly and professional growth. This position will also support a new interdisciplinary center of excellence in the molecular sciences. As such, preference will be given to candidates who are eager to participate in interdisciplinary projects with undergraduate students and biology faculty in the areas of bioinformatics and/or phylogenetic analysis.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will teach three courses per semester from the mathematics and biology curricula serving majors and non-majors at introductory and advanced levels, as well as make contributions to our general education program. The mathematics curriculum is based on a reform approach to mathematics education and encourages the use of technology as an effective means to enhance student learning. The biology curriculum is undergoing revision in part to incorporate more quantitative analysis.
