    BACKGROUND

    Bioinformatics Specialist (S2), position number 86043T, Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology – Coconut Island, UHM SOEST, (Manoa), temporary, non-tenure track, 11-month, full-time, federal funds with initial appointment for one year commencing on or around Jan-16-2007. Possibility of renewal for a second year subject to availability of funds, satisfactory performance and program needs. This is a unique opportunity to join a partnership between the University of Hawaii and the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument to address the research needs of the largest marine reserve in the world. We employ advanced technology in the service of marine conservation and seek a dynamic individual who can organize and innovate with large biological data sets.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Bioinformatics Specialist augments a team of investigators that utilize molecular methods to examine the connectivity and health of coral reef ecosystems. The position provides data mining, data visualization, statistical analysis, experimental design, and database development of genomics and proteomics studies. In addition, the position trains investigators in bioinformatics tools and provides advice about computational methods. These methods include, but are not limited to, the analysis of genes, gene expression, genotyping, protein sequences, and protein structures. The position collaborates with a diverse community of researchers from multiple labs within and outside the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology.

    REQUIREMENTS:
    The successful candidate will possess the following: a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline; demonstrated ability to conduct independent research as evidenced by publications in scientific, peer reviewed journals; demonstrated experience with programming languages such as Bash, Perl, Python, R, C, C++, Java or similar software for bioinformatics projects; demonstrated experience with database applications (SQL, Oracle, MySQL, Access or similar software); and demonstrated proficiency of written and verbal communication skills in English.

    PREFERENCES:
    Demonstrated experience with: marine organisms or systems; microarray production and management; proteomics; genomics; DNA sequence analysis; management of heterogeneous databases; and integration of bioinformatics databases and analysis tools.

    COMPENSATION:
    S2, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
