    DESCRIPTION

Part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, near Cambridge and provides cutting-edge research, service and training in the field of bioinformatics. We are looking for a software engineer to join the Nutrigenomics, Environmental genomics and Toxicogenomics (NET) Project, working in the Microarray Informatics Team and in collaboration with the Proteomics Service Team. The post holder will develop an integrated data submission tool and an advanced query interface to ArrayExpress, Pride and a new repository at the EBI. This will facilitate submission and retrieval of experiments employing transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics technologies. For more information please see the NET Project – BioMAP: http://www.ebi.ac.uk/net-project.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of infrastructure for functional genomics data, facilitating submission and retrieval of investigations employing transciptomics, proteomics and metabolomics technologies. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the project, the post holder will work closely with other members of the NET Project, in particular a software engineer, an ontologist and a postdoctoral fellow working on semantic web and will also interact with Pride and ArrayExpress developers. The post holder will present the work to our collaborators via documentation, scientific reports and meetings.

    REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate should have a background in Computer Science or Bioinformatics. Experience or strong interest in Bioinformatics with an established track record for delivering results within tight deadlines as well as previous experience with data entry and query tools is a requirement. Proficiency in Java language, experience in GUI design, frond end optimisation and web services development (Apache Axis or Sun’s JWSDP) is necessary. The post holder should have knowledge of Java Server Pages, database access and data presentation. Experience with Ajax technology and XSL transformation language would be an advantage. The successful candidate should have excellent organizational, teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills as well as the desire to work in an international environment.
