    DESCRIPTION

    Part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, near Cambridge and provides cutting-edge research, service and training in the field of bioinformatics. We are looking for a database application developer to join the Nutrigenomics, Environmental genomics and Toxicogenomics (NET) Project, working in the Microarray Informatics Team and in collaboration with the Proteomics Service Team. The post holder will design and implement a metabolomic data repository at the EBI, to store Mass Spectrometry (MS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) based experiments. The design of the MS module will leverage on the current model of Pride, the proteomics database at the EBI. The design of the NMR module will be finalized in collaboration with the members of the Metabolomics Standards Initiative (MSI).     The successful candidate will contribute to the development of infrastructure for functional genomics data, facilitating storage and integration of investigations employing transciptomics, proteomics and metabolomics technologies. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the project, the post holder will work closely with other members of the NET Project, in particular a software engineer, an ontologist and a postdoctoral fellow working on semantic web and will also interact with Pride developers and liase with members of MSI. The post holder will present the work to our collaborators via documentation, scientific reports and meetings.

    Qualifications and Experience:
    The ideal candidate should have a background in Computer Science. Experience or strong interest in Bioinformatics with an established track record for delivering results within tight deadlines as well as previous experience in object modelling and architecture is a requirement. The post holder should have expertise in relational object mapping (through hands-on experience with Hibernate or Castor), RDBMS, PL/SQL and SQL. Experience in Java project management (maven or equivalent) from database design and architecture to implementation and graphical user interface creation is essential. Knowledge of standard Java technologies, such as Struts and Java Servlets, and XML related technology (XML schema binding, XSL transformations) is necessary. The successful candidate should have experience in web services development (Apache Axis or Sun’s JWSDP). (S)he should have excellent organizational, teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills as well as the desire to work in an international environment. Advanced English skills are a necessity.

    CONTRACT

    An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
