    BACKGROUND

The Office of Science, Technology and Innovation of the Department of Industry and Resources within the Government of Western Australia is establishing a State Centre of Excellence in Computational Systems Biology. The Centre will be based in Perth and will work closely with the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology (CoE PEB), a joint venture between The University of Western Australia, the Australian National University and the University of Sydney.
The Centre of Excellence for Computational Systems Biology (CoE CSB) will involve a dedicated team of bioinformaticists/mathematicians/statisticians who will analyse the transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics data produced by the CoE PEB researchers in order to build models of plant energy metabolism. The goal will be to discover regulatory networks controlling these processes. A wider aim of the CoE CSB will be to promote the understanding and uptake of modern systems orientated approaches within biotech research and industry in WA, both in plant and animal sciences.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Contribute to internationally competitive research projects using systems
approaches to study plant energy biology
    • Promote the research program of the Centre via publication of research papers
    and presentations at international conferences
    • Supervise student projects and provide high-level research expertise to
    colleagues

    REQUIREMENTS

    • A PhD in mathematics, computer science, bioinformatics or biology
    • A good knowledge and understanding of the statistical approaches used to
analyse microarray, proteomics and/or metabolomics data
    • A demonstrated ability to be productive in a team environment
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly as applied to
the preparation of scientific papers, presentations and reports.

    LOCALE

The CoE CSB will be based alongside the CoE PEB headquarters in UWA's new Molecular and Chemical Sciences building. The positions will involve tight collaboration with CoE PEB researchers and close links to nearby computing centres such as the Western Australian Supercomputing Program based at UWA and the Centre for Comparative Genomics based at Murdoch University. UWA is located in Perth: a modern, cosmopolitan city of a little more than 1 million inhabitants, with a booming economy due to the rich natural resources in Western Australia, lively nightlife and great food and wine. The standard of living is very high and Perth was recently classed in the top five most desirable places to live in the world by ‘The Economist’.

    COMPENSATION

    4 year appointment
    Salary Range: Level A $46,345 - $62,892 p.a. - minimum starting salary for
appointee with PhD will be $58,590 p.a. (Australian $)
