• BACKGROUND

    A Bioinformatics Programmer position is available in the Global Health Bioinformatics Core facility at Seattle Biomedical Research Institute. Over 200 scientists and staff members strive to combat global infectious disease each day at Seattle Biomedical Research Institute (SBRI). By combining science and imagination, it is our goal to conquer the diseases (such as malaria, HIV) that are responsible for the majority of deaths worldwide. SBRI (http://www.sbri.org) is an independent, non-profit research institute that is affiliated with the University of Washington. SBRI occupies a new research facility that is in a fast developing Biotechnology hub in the South Lake Union area of Seattle that is home to many research organizations on the forefront of life sciences research.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    This position is responsible for providing bioinformatics programming support to SBRI researchers through the design, development and integration of software programs, scripts, web applications and databases that generate, store, manipulate and analyze biological data. Needs assessment, software design/integration and customer service are the key requirements for this position. Reporting to the Bioinformatics Core Manager, the Bioinformatics Programmer will coordinate activities with the IT Department as well as bioinformatics staff within the different SBRI research programs.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Candidates with BS degree in Computer Science and/or life sciences (such as biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, molecular biology) are encouraged to apply. College-level coursework in bioinformatics is preferred. Other qualifications include but are not limited to:
    • A minimum of three years programming experience with at least two of the following languages: Perl, .Net, C#, Java, and/or C++.
    • Familiarity with database design concepts and the relational model.
    • Experience with application development for at least one major database platform: MS SQL server, MySQL, Postgres or Oracle.
    • SQL programming, stored procedures, TSQL, SQL DTS packages and/or Perl DBI.
    • Familiarity with web-service architectures. XML, WSDL/UDDI, SOAP, OWL and RDF.
    • Experience with Linux shell scripting, DOS batch, and/or other scripting language as well as common Linux application services such as: Apache/Tomcat, SAMBA and Sun Java Enterprise Server or other enterprise application server platform.
    • Linux cluster/grid computing experience a plus.
    • Position requires a true Customer Service mindset and excellent interpersonal communication skills. Must be able to work independently with minimal guidance and have a strong attention to meeting deadlines.
