    BACKGROUND:

    The School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Washington State University invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track position in bioinformatics/computational biology. Rank for this position is open at Assistant Professor. Areas of interest include but are not limited to:
    • Research, development, or application of computational tools or approaches for expanding the use of biological, medical, or health data, including those to acquire, store, organize, archive, analyze, or visualize such data.
    • Development and application of data-analytical and theoretical methods, mathematical modeling, and computational simulation techniques for the study of biological systems.
    • Strategies for integrating diverse types of biological information to develop system-level understanding of areas such as metabolism, development, gene regulation, signal transduction, or evolutionary and ecosystem dynamics.
    This position is part of a university-wide initiative to strengthen its research and instruction programs in the application of computational approaches to various areas of biological science. Emphasis will be placed on quality research and effective teaching as well as on the ability to participate in collaborative and interdisciplinary activities.


    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Develop and maintain a vigorous research program supported by extramural funding.

    2. Train graduate students.

    3. Participate in teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in computer science or engineering, bioinformatics, or computational biology.

    4. Participate in committee service at the department, college, or university level.


    REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Earned doctorate in Computer Science or related field by January 2007

    2. A record of research accomplishments in bioinformatics or computational biology

    1. Ability to communicate effectively with both students and colleagues

    2. Record indicating outstanding abilities and potential in research and teaching

    3. Interdisciplinary research experience

Computational resources include a variety of high-speed workstations and servers and supporting software for data storage, microarray analysis, and DNA/protein sequence analysis. A central clean-room facility is under construction in the College. It will contain a range of processing tools and materials for design, fabrication, and characterization of integrated microchips.     TERMS & COMPENSATION:

    This is a permanent, full-time (academic year), tenure-track position at the WSU Pullman campus. Appointment as Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Salary is competitive and commensurate with training and experience.
