    DESCRIPTION

    My client is a leading molecular diagnostics company headquartered in cambridge, MA that has developed the first intelligent bioinformatics software designed specifically to bridge the gap between diagnosis and treatment. Their intelligent systems approach to developing molecular diagnostic and therapeutic tests enables a rapid, precise and cost-effective determination of the cause of a patient’s symptoms and conveys this information to the clinician.
    A unique opportunity exists for an experienced Manager of Software Development with a proven track record in managing software development programs. The candidate should enjoy challenging product schedules, meeting on-time deliverables and meeting targeted budgets--all without sacrificing product functionality or quality. In this hands-on role, you will participate in designing, development and maintaining our proprietary leading-edge scientific software system for managing molecular diagnostics. You will be responsible for leading strategic and tactical milestones and deliverables related to the definition, development and lifecycle of our bioinformatics, informatics and software systems, algorithms and products. You will both lead and manage our sophisticated bioinformatics software development team and collaborate with external molecular biologists, business development and R&D teams.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Define and drive the project schedule, managing team deliverables and critical deadlines.
    • Provide scientific and technical leadership and vision for a team of software engineers and scientists
    • Maintain high quality software development standards and control
    • Advise management on technical issues and feasibility of proposed product development strategy, by keeping abreast with scientific and competitive developments that contribute to our BioInformatics product vision.
    • Pro-actively support the management team in implementing measures to achieve increased operational efficiency.
    • Provide hands-on contribution to software development and scientific software testing effort.
    • Mine public and proprietary databases for sequences and strains of specific genetic targets, and create alignments of these sequences via Clustal and other programs.
    • Collaborate with scientific and engineering teams on product release requirements, to include product specifications, product performance tolerances and quality.
    • Develop realistic cost estimates for development projects in area of responsibility
    • Act as the internal and external evangelist for developed software, often working with the sales channel and key customers.
    • Ensure adherence to regulatory documentation requirements.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • BS degree plus 5+ years experience in managing bioinformatics software development projects, to include supervisory experience.
    • Strong working knowledge managing software product development schedules using agile programming following SCRUM methodology.
    • Successful track record in creating, defining, managing and driving complex project schedules, and for managing team deadlines.
    • Experience in the entire life-cycle of a scientific software project, including high-level architecture, design, implementation, quality assurance, production rollout, and maintenance.
    • Proven documentation experience meeting both software validation and regulatory guidelines
    • Solid understanding of molecular biology and genomics.
    • Working knowledge of: Perl, Java, C, HTML, XML, CGI, Java Servlets, SQL, Oracle or MySQL, application development on a UNIX/Linux platform, object oriented software, database design and implementation, web-based user-interface development, Unix shell scripting
    • Experience with versioning control software (e.g. CVS or RCS)
    • Experience with major public genomic databases, such as Genbank, UniGene, Ensembl, Entrez
    • Ability to work as both part of a team and independently, and with all levels of management and staff.
    • Self-directed, motivated, resourceful and innovative, with excellent written & oral communications, presentation, project management, conflict management and complex problem-solving skills.
