DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a Software Engineer to work in the Sequence Database Group at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) in Hinxton, UK. The successful applicant will join the EMBL Nucleotide Sequence Database project team to implement new data types and features into the Oracle 9i database. This database is part of an international collaboration with GenBank in the USA and DDBJ in Japan. Additionally, the post holder will maintain our critical operational services to the community.

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate should hold a degree in Computer Science or in Bioinformatics, and has at least 3 years of programming experience. High proficiency in C++ is expected, and a working knowledge of other languages, such as Perl and Java, will be an advantage. Experiences with Oracle programming interfaces (Pro*C, OCCI and OCI), as well as Oracle RDBMS, are desirable. The post holder is also expected to be comfortable working in Unix environments. The successful candidate should enjoy working in a team environment. Additionally, (s)he should have good communication and interpersonal as well as English skills.

CONTRACT

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
