DESCRIPTION

The primary duties are to communicate the scientific mission and activities of the EBI to the community. This will involve:
• Ensuring visibility at key meetings — collecting, preparing and editing presentation material; manning booths (often along with other scientific staff).
• Collecting and editing information for publicity material, including any pamphlets, newsletters and reports.
• Liaison with the External Services team on the content of the EBI web pages, editing and writing material for web pages.
• Liaison with the EMBL Office of Information and Public Affairs.
• Proactively seeking out aspects of EBI activities worthy of inclusion in publicity material.
• Developing existing and exploring new modalities of communication.

The post will involve substantial autonomy and will require extensive interactions with the Group and Team Leaders of the EBI and with training and outreach representatives within the groups. The role is likely to involve international travel.

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate should hold a degree in the Molecular Life Sciences, most probably followed by a PhD or other equivalent experience. The successful candidate should have at least two years’ experience in publishing, media or public relations as well as excellent writing and editing skills. (S)he should be capable of communicating complex scientific ideas to different target audiences, ranging from scientists to the general public. Marketing experience is desirable but not essential.

The post holder should have worked in an international environment, either within academia or in a commercial setting. In addition to being highly self-motivated, the ideal candidate should have excellent organisational and communication skills as well as the aptitude to contribute effectively to a team. The ability to meet tight deadlines is essential. Good knowledge of Windows, MS Office, email and internet applications is required. HTML editing and design skills are highly desirable but not necessary. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, QuarkXpress or other drawing and page-layout programmes is beneficial. Fluency in English is essential, and familiarity with other European languages is extremely preferable. Candidates with a desire to work in an international environment are encouraged to apply.

CONTRACT

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
