Opportunity: Research Scientist in Computational Biology @ EBI--Cambridge, UK
Submitted by Paul Bertone; posted on Tuesday, December 12, 2006

    BACKGROUND:
A research position in computational biology is available in the group of Dr. Paul Bertone at the EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) in Cambridge, England. We are using genomic and bioinformatics approaches to investigate the molecular processes underlying mammalian stem cell differentiation and lineage commitment. Computational biologists are sought to participate in ongoing collaborations with experimental laboratories, and to lead new research projects in human and mouse embryonic and neural stem cell characterization.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
The post holder will have the opportunity to initiate their own computational projects, but will also coordinate with colleagues in experimental labs and contribute to the design and execution of related studies. Projects will focus on large-scale gene expression profiling, comparative genomics and regulatory systems modeling.

    REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant field and display evidence of independent research, significant scientific accomplishments and expertise in advanced computational methods. Considerable knowledge of biochemistry and/or molecular cell biology is expected. The successful candidate will have a strong publication record and enjoy working on ambitious projects at the frontiers of genomics and biotechnology.

    PREFERENCES:
Expertise in genome-scale bioinformatics, microarray analysis, statistics, numerical computation and network modelling are highly desirable. The post holder will be required to communicate effectively with experimentalists and organize joint projects while maintaining active computational biology research. Therefore, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a high level of proficiency in spoken and written English, and the ability to supervise and collaborate in an international team environment are essential.

    TERMS:
An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed depending on circumstances at the time of review.

    LOCALE:
    Cambridge, UK

    HOW TO APPLY:
To apply for this position, candidates should email a cover letter, CV, list of publications and the names and addresses of at least three referees quoting reference number W/06/176 in the subject line, to: application[at]embl.de.

General enquiries may be sent to jobs[at]embl.de or to the following address: Personnel, EMBL, Postfach 10.2209, D-69012 Heidelberg, Germany - Fax: +49 6221 387555

    DEADLINE: 31 January 2007
