BACKGROUND

Seeking a Computational Biologist/Animal Geneticist to provide professional support to scientists in a laboratory whose mission is to improve the genetic and productive efficiency and health and well being of cattle through fundamental research on gene expression and marker assisted genetic selection.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent provides professional support to scientists in the conduct, report, and implementation of their research projects. Specifically, the incumbent conducts routine and situation-specific data analysis of genomic data (e.g., genetic marker, gene expression, DNA sequence) assigned by scientists; develops subject matter specifications and procedures for carrying out the projects; writes and debugs computer programs and subroutines needed to accomplish work; examines results of assigned portions of research projects to determine meaningfulness and accuracy of reports, and interprets results; assists in manuscript preparation and review, including review of literature and writing portions of manuscripts; summarizes genomic and phenotypic data, checking accuracy of incoming data, preparing summary reports, and works with scientists to identify aberrant data; and provides technical supervision to computer technicians, aides, and/or programmers.

REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must have a degree as follows: Genetics: A degree in animal genetics, or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.

Computational biology: A degree in biological sciences, computational biology, agriculture, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

In addition to the basic requirements, candidates must have additional education or specialized experience as follows:

For GS-9: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-7, or 2 years of progressively higher level related graduate education leading to a master's degree, or master's degree or equivalent graduate degree.

For GS-11: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-9, or 3 years of progressively higher level related graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or a Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree.
