    BACKGROUND:
    University of Chicago Department of Human Genetics

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • *Install/maintain the server operating systems and systems applications for servers managed by the core. (The server OS set will include Sun OS, Linux, Windows 2003 OS, Linux Clusters, Windows Clusters. Systems applications include web servers, proxy servers, compilers, publicly distributed programs, locally created programs, and vendor supplied programs.)
    • *Install/maintain the backup systems used at the core facility. In addition, ensure that the backup systems are working properly on a weekly basis, and will restore data as needed.
    • *Install, or assist the DBA to install, the collection of database schemas that will be implemented using indexed flat file data storage as well as relational databases (MySql, Oracle, DB2, etc.)
    • *Maintain security logs and automate monitoring of those logs, configure and maintain system, user account, and network security, and maintain central antivirus and anti-spyware programs.
    • *Assist users to properly utilize the systems in a proper and efficient manner. As part of this effort, may create local documentation as well as build scripts and other tools to enhance the usability of the installed applications and databases.
    • *In addition, as one of the user support contact members of the core facility, identify additional resources as dictated by the users' needs and requests. Evaluate the time, effort, and resources needed to implement such additional resources, and to formally present an implementation project for review to the core facility team. Be part the core team that locally deploys and evaluates new user applications.
    REQUIREMENTS:
    Bachelor's degree and at least seven years of post-graduate job experience (must include 5 yrs of full time systems management and, during the last 3 yrs, at least 70% of the task load being server systems management) OR a Master's degree (or higher) and at least 5 yrs of post-graduate experience as a full time systems manager (must include at least three years of job experience where at least 70% of the daily duties were server and computational cluster systems management); extensive experience managing Unix/Linux, Windows, Server Clusters, and Macintosh operating systems; demonstrated ability to multitask; experience with computational clusters and server systems used to analyze scientific data; working knowledge of standard scripting and programming languages; working knowledge of network management, e-mail systems, as well as file and security management for both the client and server sides of the operating systems listed above; experience in deploying and managing computational clusters; excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to multitask; ability to work independently and as part of a larger team to plan, deploy, and maintain file and application servers as well as client workstations, this includes equipment planning, deploying client and server applications, web sites, e-mail systems, backup systems, and special scientific applications (programming to customize as needed). The ability to work one or both weekend days routinely as part of the standard work week and to travel between campus and off campus computer facilities.
