BACKGROUND
The successful candidate will join Statistical Genetics research group involved in the development and application of statistical techniques to genetic data analysis. Our major goal is to identify genes responsible for complex human diseases. (See our web page at http://genes.uchicago.edu/cox.html). The candidate will be responsible for writing and testing new software for genetic analysis and data management, as well as modifying the existing software to achieve higher efficiency and portability. S/he will have access to a new high-speed Linux/AMD compute cluster, and a number of smaller Linux, Sun Solaris and MS Windows workstations. The person hired will also perform routine system administration support (Sun/Linux) for the group. The position offers considerable scope for creative work on important scientific problems in collaboration with other members of the research team.RESPONSIBILITIES
40% Scientific Programming Functions: Assist the members of the research team in developing, coding and testing new methods and applications. Evaluate and modify existing and newly developed software available from other groups/sources to improve efficiency and portability.
30% Data Management Functions: Assist the members of the research team in developing efficient scripts to automate data storage and management.
30% System Administrative Functions: Perform the installation, upgrade, and testing procedures for the users’ software and hardware. Provide technical support to researchers enabling them to properly use the installed programs, databases, and core hardware. Create documentation (html and paper based) for facility users to understand the correct use of the supported programs, databases, and computing equipment. Assist the team to identify core deficiencies and possible improvements.REQUIREMENTS
Master's degree in computer science, bioinformatics, statistics, engineering, or the physical sciences required; exceptional candidates with bachelor's degree may apply.
A minimum of two years of experience writing and testing scientific software in UNIX/LINUX environment required.
Excellent programming skills using C/C++, Perl and/or shell scripting, and Unix/Linux System Admin experience required.PREFERENCES
Experience with other programming languages, including Java, would be a plus, as would experience with database systems such as Oracle. Previous experience with numerical/statistical methods, algorithms and software packages preferred.LOCALE
