    DESCRIPTION

    Philip Morris USA, a global leader in the manufacturing and marketing of consumer products made for adults, seeks a qualified Scientist - Database Mgmt. to join our Research Development & Engineering department in Richmond, Virginia.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Specific Duties

    • Work as the HSR departmental IS representative, ensure the Oracle database performance, manage the biological related data and provide the data support to HSR scientists.
    • The incumbent will work with IS on Oracle databases and products installation, configuration, instance creation, back up, disaster recovery and network for Health Science Research Department.
    • The incumbent will work closely with bioinformatics/genetics/biology teams to perform the logical database schema design, modeling and construction of application databases, to modify the database structures, as necessary, based on information given by scientific team and application developers.
    • The incumbent will ensure and optimize the performance of the databases, allocate system storage and plan future requirements for the database environment.
    • The incumbent will develop and maintain scripts and utility for loading, querying, processing and staging data, analyze query plans and guide developers for best SQL practices.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer science preferred or equivalent skills through demonstrated experience.
    • 4+ years of data management experience in Oracle.
    • Strong skills on database connectivity and optimization, schema design and management, capacity planning, Perl and Unix-shell scripts.
    • Strong capability of performance tuning-SQL profiler, SQL scripts, stored procedures, triggers and functions, thorough understanding of indices and statistics (Query optimizer).
    • BS/MS degree in computer science or related field is required, experience with biotech, pharmaceutical or life sciences industries is desired.
    • Must be detail oriented and have excellent verbal and documentation skills.
