    BACKGROUND

For 30 years, Genentech has been at the forefront of the biotechnology industry, using human genetic information to develop novel medicines for serious and life-threatening diseases. Today, Genentech is among the world's leading biotech companies, with multiple therapies on the market for cancer and other unmet medical needs. The company is the leading provider of anti-tumor therapeutics in the United States.
The department of Medicinal Chemistry is focused on identifying small molecule
pharmaceuticals to complement Genentech’s Oncology franchise. The Computational
Chemistry group (within Medicinal Chemistry) applies computational methods to facilitate the rapid advancement of our small molecule programs, including structure-function data analysis, receptor-based and/or ligand-based design and screening library compound selection. The group also develops tools to facilitate access to our small molecule corporate database.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be well versed in aspects of structure-based drug design and/ or ligand-based design approaches. Responsibilities will include: selection or design of compounds for HTS libraries; rapid analysis of primary HTS data and identification of compounds for additional investigation; structure-based lead optimization; correlation of ligand structure with function or physicochemical properties (potentially involving multivariate data analysis); generation and maintenance of 3D conformational data for
commercially available compounds to be used for pharmacophore mining.
The candidate will work in close collaboration with research chemists to develop and use predictive models of the structure-activity relationships, hence good communication skills (written and oral) are essential.

    REQUIREMENTS

A BS/MS degree is required along with a minimum of 4 years computational chemistry experience. Knowledge of organic chemistry and the use of structure-based and cheminformatics approaches to drug discovery is highly desirable. Experience with medicinal chemistry software tools (Schrodinger, Accelrys, SciTegic Pipeline Pilot, Spotfire, ISIS host/base, Daylight), is advantageous. Additionally, a proven ability to work in close conjunction with other research scientists and programmers is expected.
