DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a candidate who will be part of the Microarray Informatics Software Development Team. The team is part of the Microarray Informatics Group that delivers one of the world's largest gene expression databases.
The Database Developer will play a key role in the maintenance, design and implementation of data validation, loading and transformation tools for ArrayExpress gene expression database. We are developing new software architecture for ArrayExpress, refactoring the existing system that has evolved over the past 6 years, and the post holder will be responsible for the development of data manipulation and transformation tools. We need to keep the existing production level database infrastructure running until the new architecture is ready. Therefore, the maintenance of the current generation of tools is another responsibility.REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate should hold a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Bioinformatics, IT or has equivalent work experience. We are looking for a candidate with an avid interest in software engineering and design. Familiarity with data manipulation tools is essential, preferably in the context of large databases. Experience in Bioinformatics, Biology orLife Sciences will be advantageous. The post holder should have at least 2 years of experience in Java programming, at least 3 years database programming (SQL, JDBC) and ideally also Oracle and PL-SQL. Knowledge of UNIX and shell scripting will be required; experience with Perl and XML manipulation will be a benefit.
The post holder should be a team player who takes initiative as necessary and likes to solve challenging problems. The capability to think independently and creatively and to deliver results on time will be necessary. (S)he should be able to communicate efficiently with other group members (software developers and biologists), which includes documentation writing. Some international travel may be required.CONTRACT
An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.DUTY STATION
