DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a candidate who will be part of the Microarray Informatics Software Development Team. The team is a division of the Microarray Informatics Group that delivers one of the world's largest gene expression databases.

The post holder will participate in the maintenance, design and implementation of web applications for users and curators of the ArrayExpress gene expression database. We are developing new software architecture for ArrayExpress, refactoring the existing system that has evolved over the past 6 years, and the successful candidate will play a key role in this process by building data access interfaces and tools used in the internal data curation environment. The maintenance of existing web applications and the associated software infrastructure is another aspect of the job.

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate should hold a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Bioinformatics, IT or has equivalent work experience. We are looking for a Web Application Developer with an avid interest in software engineering and design. Experience in Bioinformatics, Biology or Life Sciences will be advantageous. The post holder should have at least 3 years of experience in Java web programming, incl. Java Enterprise Edition technologies and platforms (JDBC, servlets, JSP, EJB). The successful candidate should be familiar with Java tools and development and maintenance of Java web applications (Ant, Maven, Tomcat). Knowledge of UNIX and shell scripting and experience in database applications and relational databases will be required. Expertise and/or interest in Graphical User Interface (web and desktop) development and Perl will be a plus.

The post holder should be a team player who takes initiative as necessary and likes to solve challenging problems. The capability to think independently and creatively and to deliver results on time will be necessary. (S)he should be able to communicate efficiently with other group members (software developers and biologists), which includes documentation writing. Some international travel may be required.

CONTRACT

An initial contract of 1 year will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
