BACKGROUND

Two post-doctoral positions are open at the Bioinformatics andComputational Systems Biology Unit, Institut Curie, Paris.

The first position deals with the analysis of promoter regions of genesinvolved in the transcriptome response to the activation of an oncogene,based on sequence information, transcriptome profiles, and ChIP chip data.

The second position deals with the development and application ofstatistical techniques for dimension reduction in cancer microarrayexperiments: independent component analysis and other non-linear methodswill be evaluated, applied to different cancer datasets, and thesignificance of their results assessed.

REQUIREMENTS

We expect the candidate to have formation in computational biology, physics, mathematics or computer science. The successful candidateshould have experience in modeling molecular mechanisms in biology,especially creating qualitative models. It will be advantageous to beable to demonstrate some knowledge of basic biological mechanismsinvolved in cancer (regulation of cell cycle, apoptosis, etc.) and haveexperience of collaboration with biologists for solving concretebiological problems. Other advantage will be familiarity with standardsin Systems Biology (SBML, BioPax) and with existing software for pathwaymodeling. Programming skills and good knowledge of English both spokenand written are required.

Mission location: Bioinformatics and Computational Systems Biology Unit, Institut Curie, Paris. Institut Curie is one of the biggest European institutions for researchin cancer and patient care with strong and old interdisciplinarytraditions. It is located in the center of Paris in both cultural andscientifically rich environment. The Bioinformatics Unit of InstitutCurie was created in 2003 and consists in an interdisciplinary team of25 biologists, mathematicians, statisticians, physicists and computerscientists. One important research direction of the unit is formalizingbiological and clinical knowledge about cancer and confronting it withthe results of high-throughput experiments (microarrays, molecularinteractions, cellular phenotypes ...) being made in the biologicallaboratories of Institut Curie.
