    DESCRIPTION

    We are looking for a Software Engineer to work in the Database Applications Team in the Sequence Database Group at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI). The successful applicant will join the EMBL Nucleotide Sequence Database project team to maintain our critical operational services to the community, and to implement new data types and features into the Oracle 9i database when it is required.

    The EMBL Nucleotide Sequence Database (also known as EMBL-Bank) constitutes Europe’s primary nucleotide sequence resource. Main sources for DNA and RNA sequences are direct submissions from individual researchers, genome sequencing projects and patent applications. This database is part of an international collaboration with GenBank in the USA and the DNA Database of Japan (DDBJ).

    QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

    The Software Engineer should hold a degree in Computer Science or Bioinformatics. A degree in Life Science requires a proven record in software development. The ideal candidate has at least 3 years of experience in programming. High proficiency in Perl and shell programming language is expected. A working knowledge of other languages, such as C++, and experience with large operational systems will be an advantage. The post holder should be comfortable working in Unix environments and ideally have experience with Oracle RDBMS. We are looking for a Software Engineer who has good communication and interpersonal skills. Additionally, (s)he is able to work successfully in a team as well as under pressure. Good English skills are a prerequisite.

    TERMS

    An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
