Job Description:
The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), and is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus at Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK. The Ensembl group is one of the leaders in Metazoan genome annotation and part of the team is creating a new international data resource for the storage and analysis of genotype data.
The European Genotype Archive (EGA) project is looking for a Computational Biologist / Bioinformatician who will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the EGA including the development of primary analysis and data mining techniques. The EGA will store both publicly available and limited access data and a primary aspect of the job will be to integrate available data for whole genome association studies.
Qualifications and Experience:
The Scientific Programmer should hold a PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics, or Bioinformatics. Proficiency in Perl and relational databases (e.g. MySQL and Oracle) is required. The post holder should be comfortable working in a UNIX environment and with very large databases. Experience with genotype data from vendors such as Affymetrix and Illumina is desirable.
The ideal candidate should be capable to work in a fast-paced team and enjoy challenging problems. The ability to interact with a broad range of specialists including Physicians, clinical and population Geneticists, and Bioinformaticians will be necessary. The post holder should have good communication and interpersonal as well as excellent English skills. Some international travel may be required.
Contract:
An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
