    Job Description:
    The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), and is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus at Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK. The Ensembl group is one of the leaders in Metazoan genome annotation and part of the team is creating a new international data resource for the storage and analysis of genotype data.

    The European Genotype Archive (EGA) project is seeking to recruit a detail-orientated bioinformatician/database programmer who will be responsible for the development and maintenance of the underlying EGA database. The EGA will store both publicly available and limited access data in support of data generators and researchers around the world.

    Qualifications and Experience:
    The Scientific Programmer should hold a degree in Computer Science or Bioinformatics, and have at least three years programming experience. Proficiency in Perl and relational databases (e.g. MySQL and Oracle) is required. The post holder should be comfortable working in a UNIX environment and with very large databases. Experience with biological and/or genotype data and database security is desirable.

    The ideal candidate should be capable to work in a fast-paced team and have good interpersonal skills. The ability to communicate effectively, including documentation writing, with a diverse team that includes Biologists and Computer Scientists is expected. Some international travel may be required.

    Contract:
    An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
