Job Description:
We are looking for Scientific Database Curators within the EMBL Nucleotide Sequence Database team, to assist in the annotation and management of nucleotide data.
The core of curation work is carried out in close communication with our international base of data submitters with the aim of optimising annotation of incoming data and maximising integration with existing records. The post holder will deal with submissions from all areas of biological study and contribute to the development of annotation standards within the database. Curators work closely with software engineers in the development of tools, internal and external, for data submission and curation.
The team maintains close collaborations with data submitters and database users and offers extensive helpdesk facilities. Curators provide the public face of the project and are responsible for promoting use of the resource, user training and investigation of new types of nucleotide sequence and user requirements.
Qualifications and Experience:
The successful candidates should be computer-literate and possess a university degree in the life sciences, as well as have broad knowledge of molecular biology. PhD or MSc, although desirable, is not essential. Previous experience with UNIX, Windows, biological databases and sequence analysis would be advantageous. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, attention to detail, as well as the ability to work to deadlines are essential. Candidates with an ambition to work in an international environment are encouraged to apply.
Contract:
An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidates. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
