BACKGROUND

Rosetta Inpharmatics LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Merck & Co. Inc., develops and implements technologies that will improve drug discovery. The company's leading-edge genomic research and data analysis efforts focus on how medical compounds affect biology, enabling more accurate selection of drug targets and more efficient drug development.

We are currently looking for an energetic Senior Database Developer who is highly motivated to apply sound software engineering practices in our cutting-edge biology and computational research environment. The successful candidate will be a key member of a close-knit team of biologists, geneticists, bioinfomaticians, and computational scientists committed to pushing the limits of basic research in biological networks and genetics while simultaneously ensuring that this top-flight science is applied to clinical and basic research in drug discovery.

The individual we are seeking must posses a strong drive to improve the daily productivity of biological, genetic, and computational scientists that absolutely depend on databases used to reconstruct gene networks driving common human diseases, with an ultimate goal of identifying novel drug targets to treat disease and elucidating how variations in biological networks can affect response to treatment of disease with a drug. They will also have a proven record of getting robust software built in fast-moving situations and an ability to raise the bar for both database content and database development with an emphasis on increasing overall quality and availability.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Designing, developing, and delivering end-to-end database solutions applied to genomics, proteomics and database systems required to support Genetics processes;
• Determining requirements, developing logical data models, creating physical database designs, assessing implementation alternatives and formulating overall design approaches;
• Leading implementation efforts, managing software development projects and coordinating with developers inside and outside the Genetics department as needed. Examples of development areas include database specific software that deals with sequences, single nucleotide polymorphisms, haplotypes, genetic networks, computational analysis results, and experimental and computational metadata;
• Utilizing data models, recommending appropriate database designs, explaining merits of choice, creating a physical database design, and implementing it on RDBMS or MDDB;
• Consulting with end-users for reporting and analysis needs and providing recommendations for potential solutions;
• Ensuring that Genetics databases meet expectations for reliability;
• Providing consultation and ad-hoc support to Genetics staff as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor's or MS degree in computer science or a related engineering field;
• Three years' experience with databases using RDBMS technology, SQL server or Oracle a plus;
• Programming experience with Java, C#, C++, SQL, PL/SQL or Perl;
• Two years' experience in scientific database design is a plus;
• Experience in bioinformatics and a working understanding of Biology or Genetics is a plus;
• We are looking for an individual with excellent interpersonal skills;
• Good oral and written communications skills required.
