BACKGROUND

We are looking for an EMMA Database Developer/Bioinformatician/Computational Biologist to join us at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory – European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) at the prestigious Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire. We are a leading international provider of cutting-edge research, service and training in the field of Bioinformatics.

EMMA – http://www.emmanet.org – is a multi-centric European consortium that is responsible for the collection, cryopreservation and distribution of mouse mutant strains which are essential for biomedical research. We are seeking to recruit a database developer/maintainer who will be responsible for maintaining and developing the production database and associated scripts.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful applicant will act as the EMMA database/web coordinator and be in direct contact and discussions with the other European partners involved in the project. The role will involve regular monthly travel to the other European sites to discuss specifications, issues and improvements. Applicants will ideally have experience of supervising another web developer who will be responsible for the development and maintenance of the public and internal EMMA websites as well as all the web interfaces that are used internally to access and update the EMMA relational database.

REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must hold a degree in Computer Science, ideally a degree/PhD in Bioinformatics and have at least 3 years programming and work experience in the biology field. A background in biology and particular knowledge of mouse genetics and use of mouse animal models is highly desirable.

The postholder is expected to be working in a Unix environment and proficiency in Java, Perl and shell scripting is required to deal with production data handling in a LIMS-like database. Web design experience is a definite plus.

The successful candidate must also demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills as well as be a teamplayer who works independently with a minimum of supervision.
