BACKGROUND

We are looking for a Scientific Programmer/Bioinformatician/Computational Biologist to join us at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory – European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) at the prestigious Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire. We are a leading international provider of cutting-edge research, service and training in the field of Bioinformatics.

A position has become available to work within the Ensembl/Reactome group at the EBI, funded by the European Network of Excellence (ENFIN). ENFIN is a network of 20 laboratories, including computational scientists and experimental biologists which aims at developing methods and tools for the research in Systems Biology (http://www.enfin.org). We are looking for a Programmer/Computational Biologist/Bioinformatician who will take responsibility for the development of a new database aimed at collecting biological data generated within the ENFIN project (Protein function, Pathway reconstruction). The database will be linked to the Reactome database, a curated database of molecular reactions (http://www.reactome.org). There is a possibility, depending on the experience/expertise of the successful applicant for a research project on gene expression dataset analysis. There is also the opportunity of some international travel.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful applicant must have experience of a Unix environment and used to working with large databases as well as experience in at least one modern programming language (Perl, Python, Java) and a research track record in some aspects of biological data analysis. Experience with gene expression data and analysis methods would be an advantage.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must demonstrate good communication, organisational and interpersonal skills as well as fluency in English. The ability to work as a member of a larger team as well as the ability to work independently are essential.

TERMS

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
