BACKGROUND
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join us at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory – European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) at the prestigious Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire. We are a leading international provider of cutting-edge research, service and training in the field of Bioinformatics.RESPONSIBILITIES
InterPro is a project based at EBI (European Bioinformatics Institute) whose primary purpose is the classification of protein sequences into protein families and functional domains using predictive models. The InterPro web interface is arguably the most popular resource serving this type of data to the scientific community world-wide. The group also produces the InterProScan software package and the ClusTr database, as well as developing proprietary software to aid data production and curation processes.
We are seeking a software engineer to join our team of developers. The ideal candidate would be a strong communicator with the ability to quickly identify and solve problems of database scaling and performance without sacrificing data quality.
Responsibilities:
• Maintenance and further development of the ClusTr database of protein similarities (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/clustr/ )
• Maintenance and further development of the internal InterProScan pipeline for generation of InterPro signature matches against UniParc protein sequences
• Overall responsibility for data quality in the InterPro databaseREQUIREMENTS
Qualifications and Experience:
A degree in a relevant field (computer science or bioinformatics) and/or proven professional experience in software development are essential as is expertise with Java, knowledge of relational databases and SQL, preferably Oracle, experience using high-end computing resources and queue systems. Some perl knowledge would be useful but is not essential as is an understanding of molecular biology.TERMS
An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
