    High Performance Data Mining and Machine Learning Algorithms in Computational Sciences

    BACKGROUND

    In many areas of Science the widespread availability of high throughput technologies has fostered an unprecedented opportunity to collect and analyse vast amounts of experimental data. The discovery of patterns, information and knowledge in large, structured and unstructured data sets is fundamental for advances and discoveries in Computational Sciences.

    The scholarship will support a Ph.D. student to study efficient Data Mining and Machine Learning algorithms for applications in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences. The scholarship is integrated into a larger project, which leverages parallel and distributed computing to provide a general, extensible, component-based, distributed data mining framework for computational sciences.

    Research Environment and Computing Infrastructure
    The project is set in the international research environment of the "Parallel, Emergent & Distributed Architectures" (PEDAL) group at the School of Systems Engineering and the "Advanced Computing and Emerging Technologies" (ACET) Centre. The ACET Centre is leading the Computational Science Cross Cutting research at the University of Reading, focusing on modelling and simulation of complex systems, scalable algorithms, tools and environments for collaboration and Grid computing. The excellent computing infrastructure includes an IBM Blade Centre with 3040 processing elements, which is ranked 36th in the June 2007 top500 list of the most powerful supercomputers.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Applicants should have completed a degree in Computer Science or a strongly related discipline. Strong computing and mathematical skills are preferable. Experience in any field related to the project, such as data mining, machine learning, parallel and distributed computing, bioinformatics and chemoinformatics, are preferable.

    COMPENSATION

    This studentship covers both academic fees (£3240 for UK and EU students) and subsistence (£12600) for a total of £15840 per annum for three years. Additional academic fees for overseas students are not covered.
