BACKGROUND

Functional Genomics of Ageing: Computational Modelling

We are looking for a Biologist/Bioinformatician/Computational Biologist to join us at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory – European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) at the prestigious Wellcome Trust Genome Campus in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire. We are a leading international provider of cutting-edge (UK)research, service and training in the field of Bioinformatics.

Computational biologists and bioinformaticians are sought as part of a large consortium seeking to identify conserved biological processes associated with longevity. The Wellcome Trust Functional Genomics of Ageing Consortium is using model organisms (worms, flies and mice) to understand the biological processes that extend lifespan and delay age related diseases. The collaboration has access to cutting edge microarray technology which will be used to identify the genes and pathways associated with transcriptional and regulatory changes associated with longevity.

The successful candidate would be involved with the analysis of a range of microarray experiments (mRNA expression, ChIP-chip, DAM-ID, microRNA, whole genome tiling arrays) and will have the opportunity to develop computational methodology and tools to identify conserved biological processes and regulatory networks associated with lifespan extension. The post holder will have the opportunity to develop computational tools for pathway and network analysis of the microarray data, but will also collaborate with colleagues in experimental labs at University College London on the design and analysis of related studies.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field and display evidence of independent research, significant scientific accomplishments and expertise in advanced computational methods. The successful candidate must have a strong publication record.

Programming experience and expertise (PERL, C, JAVA or HTML) is essential, and expertise in genome-scale bioinformatics, microarray analysis, statistics, numerical computation or network modelling using software such as R or Matlab is desirable. The post holder will be required to communicate effectively with experimentalists and have the ability to supervise and collaborate with other bioinformaticians at the EBI and University College London.

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.

Interviews will be held on 1 October 2007 at EBI in Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK and we anticipate the successful applicant to commence duties as of 1 November 2007.
