DESCRIPTION

Nature Source Genetics (http://naturesourcegenetics.com) is a computational genomics company dedicated to the development and application of new algorithms designed to harness natural genetic variation in the improvement of crop plants. Located in Ithaca, New York, NSG scientists interact with a team of distinguished faculty from Cornell University and other major research institutions, in problems related to quantitative genetics, including optimization of population structure/design, QTL detection/validation, and QTL deployment in commercial breeding programs. In addition to the computational headquarters in Ithaca, NSG has access to experimental field test sites around the world. This position will work with and support a team of scientists working in the areas of computational genomics, statistics, quantitative/population genetics and plant breeding.

Nature Source Genetics is a small and growing company with plans to develop several databases. We would look to the successful candidate to help direct our database development efforts and to guide the company in its future database projects.

REQUIREMENTS

• B.S. or M.S. degree in computer science, bioinformatics or related discipline
• 3-5 years of experience in building and managing relational databases with emphasis on data modeling experience
• Knowledge of database programming
• Ability to work independently
• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with others

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Architectural design, data modeling and implementation of databases (MySQL or other) on Windows and/or Mac platforms
• Improve performance, scalability and stability of databases
• Troubleshoot functional and performance issues with database objects
• Write database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions
• Administer access permissions and privileges
• Train and meet users' access requirements
• Ensure that storage, archiving, backup and recovery procedures are functioning correctly
• Development and testing support (helping programmers and users to efficiently utilize the database)
