    DESCRIPTION

    The Institute of Food Research seeks applicants for an indefinite research post in the area of computational biology. The position involves working closely with bioinformaticians and protein biochemists as part of a program linking protein structure to allergenicity. The successful applicant will apply protein modelling skills to:
    • Mapping peptide ‘fingerprints’ to in-silico modelled protein digestion.
    • Relating fragmentation profiles to known B-cell and T-cell epitopes in allergens.
    • Simulating the link between molecular mobility and digestion kinetics.

    REQUIREMENTS

    The applicant should have a PhD in Applied Mathematics, Theoretical Physics, Bioinformatics, Structural Biology or an equivalent background. Familiarity with mathematical modelling of biological systems is expected and knowledge of proteins is desirable, while experience with Molecular Dynamics and other statistical mechanical computer simulation methods would be advantageous. An ability to work in a multidisciplinary team combining practical and theoretical science is desirable.

    Based in the pleasant city of Norwich, the Institute of Food Research offers a wide expertise base, and state-of-the-art facilities for fundamental research in food, diet and health.

    COMPENSATION

    Starting salary will be in the range of £24,200 to £27,200 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. Superannuation is provided by the Research Councils’ Pension Scheme. The post carries no formal teaching commitment and no specified end date.
